Balmorhea’s rich and layered music continues to be simultaneously concise and complex, uniting a collection of ideas, textures, and sounds into one genre-defying landscape. Founded by Rob Lowe and Michael Muller in 2006, the six-piece instrumental group from Austin, Texas has produced six full-length albums, including the most recent Clear Language
— in tandem with a EP of reworks featuring William Basinski and the 2018 Record Store Day follow-up 7", Chime/Shone.
A relaxed, clear-eyed sense of reflection flows gracefully through their music; transmitting unfettered meaning through simple sonic gestures that resonate with the cosmos as much as they echo the pulse of a human heart. In a culture dominated by the loudest, ostentatious voices, Balmorhea continue to prove the power and importance of restraint and minimalism.
Inceptually influenced by the band’s namesake, a tiny West Texas town, Balmorhea’s early work reflected motifs of the American Southwest. Called “an exemplary experiment in restraint” by The New Yorker, the band has toured the US and Europe eight times each, including shows in China, Mexico, Russia and Turkey.
